On the trip to Greece is pretty typical start for a few days discovering the capital, Athens , and then find the beautiful beaches and the beauty of its precious and very many islands. It is very difficult to have the willpower and tenacity of Ulysses to resist the siren songs of these mythological islands, so do not let yourself be embraced by rebels and their charms.
The most popular among travelers often the Cyclades Islands, whose crown jewel is Santorini . Also known as Thira, this small archipelago is closer to Turkey than the Peloponnese. Its volcanic formation, its whitewashed villages, its famous sunsets and nightlife make enjoy in one form or another of its charms.
Being surrounded by the Aegean Sea, we only have two options to tread its beautiful coasts, take the plane or ferry. We will explain how to get from Athens to Santorini:
Directions from Athens to Santorini by plane
This is the most expensive option of the two, but certainly the fastest and comfortable. If you can afford it do not hesitate, especially if you have little time in your trip to Greece. We were on the way by ferry and return by plane and the difference is huge in terms of time and convenience. The journey between Athens and Santorini is covered in just 40 minutes.
To travel from the Eleftherios Venizelos Athens airport to Santorini and vice versa, you can buy flights on different airlines, but the most common are Aegean Airlines , Olympic Air , Ryanair and Volotea . If you want to travel directly from Spain to Santorini you should know that there is currently no direct flight, so I always have to go through Athens or gold airports with direct connections to Santorini.
Directions from Athens to Santorini by ferry
We have seen that Santorini is a popular tourist destination. There are a lot of cruise ships arriving to the islands, but stop on the main island a few hours and quickly return to the ship. We like most other options that allow you to spend more time discovering the attractions of Thira and its white and blue bucolic villages.
Therefore, ferries and catamarans are another alternative marina (unless you can afford to rent a sailboat). The first is to reach the port of Piraeus from Athens. Piraeus port is huge but has very good signage for guidance.
You can reach Piraeus on line 1 of the subway, tram or bus. Once you get to the port, the posters bearing the names of the islands to where the ferries are going. If you travel to Santorini looking label Cycladic Islands.
Then you will play choose between different types of companies and ferry. The fast which is more expensive or slower than logically cheaper. The difference in price and speed also lies in the number of stops made by the ship, in different islands before arriving at Santorini.
There are many companies as Hellenic Seaways , Blue Star or Dodekanisos . We do not remember exactly which traveled us. We only know that cost about 60 euros per person and we were promised that we would arrive at our destination in about four hours. At the end were seven with three stops and much, much movement, as the sea was very choppy that day.
Also if you make the trip planteas slow speed in note that the price is around € 40 per person and it takes at least seven and a half hours (we do not want to imagine the eternal to do with rough seas).
Our recommendation is that values well all alternatives. Weigh whether it is worth spending a little more and get a quick Santorini and comfortably by plane. We who have tried both options we have very clear
